What privacy compliance actually costs an Australian real-estate agency

There is no single price for getting your agency's privacy sorted. The options run from free templates that quietly go out of date, to lawyer-drafted documents, to full AML/CTF readiness the government estimates in the tens of thousands. Here is an honest map of what each costs and what you actually get.

Three things separate a document you can rely on from a file you downloaded: is it written for real estate, has a solicitor reviewed it, and does someone keep it current when the law changes? Most options do one of the three. Very few do all three.

Of the options below, Privaproof (A$539/year incl GST) is the only one that is real-estate-specific, has all fourteen documents reviewed by an Australian solicitor, and is kept current as the Privacy Act changes.

Prices are as each provider listed them on 20 July 2026, in Australian dollars, and are point-in-time. GST treatment varies by provider and is shown per row; where a provider does not state GST, it is marked "GST not stated". Privaproof's A$539 is GST-inclusive.

The only row that is real-estate-specific, fully solicitor-reviewed, and kept current, for A$539/year.

Privaproof's row is highlighted and shown near the top; the others are in price order. The model column matters: a one-off purchase, an annual subscription and a per-document fee are not the same thing, so this is a like-for-like view of price, structure and scope, not a single "cheaper or dearer" ranking. Two rows are AML/CTF products (a separate obligation from privacy), tagged as such.

Prices were checked to the best of our knowledge on the date shown. Providers can change their pricing at any time, so please confirm the current price with each provider before relying on it. Spotted something out of date? Tell us at hello@privaproof.com.au and we'll fix it.

Two numbers worth knowing

Free is real, but it is not "kept current." The OAIC provides genuinely free guidance and some templates. It does not provide a general privacy-policy template, a real-estate-specific set, or anything that updates when the law changes. A file you download today is right today and drifts as the rules move.
The other end of the range is large. For the AML/CTF reforms reaching real estate from 1 July 2026, the Australian Government's Impact Analysis (August 2024) estimated readiness costs of about A$28,650 upfront and A$33,230 a year for a business turning over $200k–$2m, scaling with turnover. Privacy is a related but separate obligation; the point is that "compliance" spans $0 to tens of thousands.

Where a maintained kit fits

Privaproof is an annual subscription (A$539/year incl GST, founding) rather than a one-off file or a per-document legal fee. That combines three things the cheaper end does not: it is real-estate-specific, all fourteen of its documents are reviewed by an Australian solicitor, and it is kept current as the Privacy Act and AML/CTF rules change, so the version in your kit stays right instead of ageing on your hard drive.

Common questions

How much does privacy compliance cost an Australian real-estate agency?

It ranges from $0 (free OAIC guidance and templates you keep current yourself) to well over a thousand dollars for lawyer-drafted documents or law-firm packs, and into the tens of thousands for full AML/CTF readiness. A maintained, real-estate-specific privacy kit like Privaproof sits at A$539/year incl GST.

Is the free OAIC template enough for a real-estate agency?

It is a valid free starting point for general guidance, but the OAIC does not provide a general privacy-policy template or a real-estate-specific set, and a copy you download does not update when the law changes.

What makes Privaproof different from a $79 privacy-policy generator?

A generator produces a generic, one-time policy. Privaproof is real-estate-specific, all fourteen documents are reviewed by an Australian solicitor, and it is kept current as the Privacy Act changes, included in the yearly price.

*Solicitor-reviewed refers to Privaproof's fourteen real-estate documents. General information, not legal advice. Prices are as listed by each provider on 20 July 2026 and may have changed; verify with the provider before relying on any figure. GST treatment varies by provider and is shown as listed; where not stated, it is marked so. Comparisons are of price, model and scope only; Privaproof makes no claim about the quality of any other provider's product. Two listed options (AMLCompliant, and Realgate's broader membership) are AML/CTF or whole-agency products, a separate matter from privacy compliance. Privaproof is a privacy-compliance product and does not provide legal advice or assess AML/CTF obligations.
